His family didn’t know wh=
at
to do with him. During one of their long discussio=
ns one
of his brothers, the stable one, finally just said it, “I think he=
217;s
out of his mind and we need to go get him and bring him home! Enough is
enough!”
All agreed, even his mother, albeit reluctantly. She thought maybe this family
intervention could help him regain his sanity. He just needed some time off, some=
rest,
some recuperation.
It wasn’t that he was getting drunk, stealing, carousing or
doing anything illegal. Neither was he drooling, babbling, or hallucinating
like a lunatic.
Quite to the contrary! He
was being too good!
He was helping too many people and upsetting everybody! He just didn’t know when to
quit. So while helping the po=
or and
sick he was also causing upheaval and pain to their family and respected co=
mmunity
friends and leaders.
The other day he had the gall to heal a man right during church. On
the day when no one’s supposed to work he worked and, of course, real=
ly
ticked off the leaders.
All so unnecessary! If he’d just settle down.
So his mother and brothers came looking for him. They would seize =
him
and force him to go with them if didn’t cooperate. As usual, there was a large crowd =
in and
around the house where he was holding another one of his crazy meetings.
Their words were forwarded into the crowd sitting inside who said =
to him,
“Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.”
Jesus answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?R=
21;
Then looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “He=
re
are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God, he is my broth=
er
and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:21, 32-36 ESV)
This story always rocks me.
Jesus gives such a radical answer.&=
nbsp;
What did his dear mother think? How about his brothers? Why was he so blunt? Couldn’=
t he
have avoided this scene? Why didn’t he? Sometimes I wonder if this st=
ory
is comprehended today? We try=
so
hard to blend the two families. Why
didn’t Jesus?
